Tips on Choosing Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring looks and feels like any hardwood flooring, but it is made from the bamboo plant. It has all the characteristics of a real hardwood including the physical look and strength. Such tiles are durable and are resistant to moisture as well as insects. Maximum bamboo products come from China and other parts of Asia. The Moso bamboo is one such type of bamboo that is commonly used for manufacturing these floorings.

Advantages of Bamboo Flooring

  • Easy maintenance

Just like any timber flooring, the bamboo flooring is also very easy to maintain. With just vacuuming or brushing you can remove small dust particle. You can also mop it occasionally with a wet mop. The bamboo flooring can also be cleaned with a nonwax hardwood or bamboo floor cleanser.

  • Water resistant

The bamboo is more resistant to damage from water and stains than other hardwood materials used for flooring.

  • Eco-friendly

Bamboo is a grass which grows in large number and very quickly. It also reaches maturity in three to five years, unlike other trees which require more than twenty years to reach maturity.

  • Natural

The demand for more ecological products is huge now. Hence, bamboo is an ideal product which is natural and at the same time grows quickly.

  • Durability

As far as strength is concerned certain types of bamboo are strong and durable. The un-carbonized natural bamboo is similar to the red oak in the durability aspect. Hence bamboo flooring lasts long.

  • Price

The bamboo flooring almost costs similar to any hardwood floors. Hence, one can easily go for such kind of flooring.

  • Style

Bamboo flooring looks like hardwood flooring, but it has some distinct features. It enhances the look of the house and makes the space classy and elegant.

  • Refinishing

The bamboo floors may get scratched or discolored with time. But the surface can again be given a new fresh look with sanding it down and then reapplying the finishing coats.

Consideration for Bamboo Flooring:

  • Quality

Bamboo floor materials have no grading system so it will be either Grade A or Grade B. Good manufacturers provide good quality products only.

  • Warranty

Most bamboo floor materials last for a long time. Some reputed dealers also provide warranty on the products. Quality products have longer and extensive warranty.

  • Durability

Carbonization is the process where bamboo is placed under a high level of heat and pressure. This process thus changes the color of the bamboo. The dark bamboo is less durable because carbonization weakens the material.

Types of Bamboo Flooring:

  • Horizontal, Vertical or Strand Woven

The bamboo floors look different by the way the slices of bamboo are laminated together. They are of three types:

  1. Strand Woven: Such kind of bamboo floor material gives a consistent look of natural wood as it shows the joints where the bamboo shreds are forced together.
  2. Horizontal: This kind of bamboo flooring has strips that are placed side by side and on top of one another. The horizontal planks provide natural bamboo features with less joint lines.
  3. Vertical: Here the strips of bamboo are pushed to bind at the edges. It has more joint lines with few natural features.
  • Colors

The bamboo flooring is available in wide range of colors. It depends on your interest to choose among the materials.

Disadvantages of Bamboo Flooring:

  • Emission of VOCs

The bamboo floor planks are manufactured by slicing the stalks of bamboo and putting them together using a resin based adhesive, heat, and pressure. This adhesive with time releases volatile organic chemicals into the air.

  • Damage from water and humidity

Although bamboo is resistant to water yet excessive moisture can cause molds to grow. Humidity can cause the floor planks to plump, and dry environment can cause it to shrink.
