We’ve gathered five of the best and simplest ways to reorganize your abode. Put a handful of them into practice or try all five. Then, bask in the glory of your work and watch as life becomes that much easier.
Office: File in Color
The only thing that distinguishes one manila folder from the other is the label you write or stick onto the tab. You can organize them alphabetically, of course, but we want you to take your file organization system one step further.
Figure out a way to group your files – perhaps you can gather all of the files that contain bills, all of the files that contain warranties and contracts, all of the files that contain personal information, etc. Choose a color to represent each group, and then move all your files from manila to folders of their new color. Place them in your drawer by color and in alphabetical order on top of that. The resulting system will be visually appealing and extremely functional – just grab the file you need and go.
Linen Closet: Sort Your Sheets
Your linen closet holds plenty of sheet sets, but how do you keep all of the flat sheets, fitted sheets, and pillowcases together? We bet most people organize them as such, but here’s a better way to keep your sheet sets in order.
Grab ribbon from your gift-wrapping supply box or pick up some twine from your local craft or home improvement store. Then, tie up each piece of a single sheet set into a nice parcel so that, the next time you make a bed, all you have to do is grab one tied-up package. If you have beds of different sizes in your home, label the part of the shelf where your sheets will sit so you know if you’re grabbing a set of twin XL sheets or California kings.
Family Room or Kitchen: Prop a Ladder
Interior designers love to revamp recycled or rejected materials and make them into something beautiful and useful. You can find countless examples on Pinterest and in magazines, but one of our favorites is the use of a ladder as an organization tool.
Open your ladder and place pieces of wood between the steps to create shelves. They can be display or storage shelves, depending on the space you have and the look you envision. A ladder with cylindrical rods for steps can be used as a pot rack if you grab a handful of S hooks at your local hardware store. Hang one side on the road and loop the handle of the pot or pan through the other.
Kitchen: Pick up the Pantry
There are few things more satisfying than a well-organized kitchen. Alternatively, opening the door or cabinet to reveal a pantry that’s disorganized can cause you stress and keep you from taking full advantage of your kitchen and cooking potential. Spend a weekend organizing your pantry by following a handful of simple steps, like adding shelving that best fits whatever space you’re using as a pantry. Use light colors and actual light to make it feel even cleaner and airier.
Bedroom Closet: Go Seasonal
Finally, pull the curtain back on your stuffed closet. You will not believe how much easier mornings become when you have a closet that’s completely working for you. You can find countless closet organizing tips on the Internet, but here’s our advice.
First, get rid of the things you haven’t worn in a calendar year. Then, organize them by season and place this season’s wardrobe at the forefront of your closet. Fold sweaters and other knits and place them on a shelf. Hang the rest and organize shoes on the floor. Make sure your hangers are nonslip so your closet stays as spiffy as the day you put everything in order.
Clearly, these five organizational updates aren’t the be-all, end-all of your organizational dreams. They are simply meant to kick-start your productive weekend and inspire further updates so your house can work better for you. Now you can really kick your shoes off and prop your feet up without feeling any sense of regret or guilt – you’ve earned it.
